John Yohan Cho was born in Seoul, South Korea, on June 16, 1972, and moved to the States at age six. He studied English at UCLA (and is a certified teacher), but also performed on stage. He had some success in comedies like American Pie and the Harold & Kumar-series (in which he played main character Harold Lee), and had noteworthy guest appearances in How I Met Your Mother, House, M.D. and 'Ugly Betty. He also played Hikaru Sulu in the 2009 film Star Trek, a role that used to be played by George Takei.
