"They're Playing My Song" is the fifth episode of Static Shock. It first aired on November 11, 2000.

Plot

Rubberband Man breaks into a record company, trying to find the man who stole his hit song from him. A record executive says it was Ice Pack. Ice Pack is living off of RB Man's wealth now since he has that song. RB Man attacks Ice Pack, but is stopped by Static. RB Man defeats him and continues chasing Ice Pack. Robert makes Virgil get a job, so he applies at Burger Fool. When Freida plays Ice Pack's music, a person gets mad and walks out.

While Ice Pack is signing CDs, RB Man shows up and kidnaps him, putting him on top of a spire. RB Man claims to have written the music Ice Pack raps to, but Ice Pack has no idea what he's talking about. At Burger Fool, Virgil sneaks out to go to the situation. When Ice Pack starts to fall, Static catches him. As it turns out, Ice Pack's producer was the one who ripped him off. RB Man, whose real name is Adam Evans, confronts the producer. The producer admits to it and locks him in a vault. Static shows up and figures out RB Man is stuck. Static frees him and RB Man immediately goes after the producer, trying to choke him. Static stops and defeats him. RB Man and D.J., the producer, are both sent to jail. Virgil then ends up getting fired for sneaking out.

Production notes

  • The original television broadcast included the line "Even Clark Kent has a day job" when Richie welcomes Static to the Abandoned Gas Station of Solitude. This was removed from later broadcasts and the DVD release (leaving a long silence instead). When first produced, Static Shock was not part of the DCAU, and comic heroes were fictional in the show. After the second season, the line was cut as the series was absorbed into the DCAU.

Production inconsistencies

  • In the original credits, Jason Marsden is credited for the part of Rubberband Man, and Kadeem Hardison for Static. This was corrected for the DVD release.
  • When Sharon calls Virgil by his full name to get him to wake up, the closed caption on the scene incorrectly shows his middle name as "Albert" instead of "Ovid".

Quotes

Ice Pack: All right, all right! It's my producer. That's who ripped him off.

Richie: So what do you think?
Virgil: I think this place needs to be renovated before it could even qualify as a dump!
Richie: C'mon, V, use your imagination! Right now, this might be an old, run-down, rat-infested...
Virgil: RAT-INFESTED!?
Richie: We'll set traps.

Virgil: (deadpan) Welcome to Burger Fool, where we're a fool for our customers. Can I take your order?
Teen: Ah haha! I'll have a Big Fool, with an order of fries, and a Lucky Cola!
Richie: Yeah, and I'll have a side order of your self-respect! Ahahahahaha!
Virgil: (sarcastically) Thank you, sirs, always glad to be of service.

Ice Pack: Who? What? I ...
Static: You rappers certainly are an articulate bunch. What was that, freestyle?

DJ Rock: What are the odds I'd steal from one of those bang babies?
Henchman: Pretty good, boss. You steal from a lot of people.

Richie: All that money, and you had to leave it behind. Seems a waste.
Virgil: Superheroes don't take money. Superheroes work at Burger Fool.
Richie: Superheroes used to work at Burger Fool.
Virgil: Huh?
Richie: I've been meaning to tell you. After you ran out, you got pink-slipped.
Virgil: Oh, man!
Richie: And on a related note, your dad's been looking for you.
Virgil: Anything else?
Richie: Well, I know how much you wanted the new Ice Pack CD, but, after all this?
(Virgil then takes the CD and uses his powers to dump it in a trash receptacle)
Virgil: Thanks, anyway.
