"World's Finest" is the 16th, 17th and 18th episodes of the second season of Superman: The Animated Series, and the 29th, 30th, and 31st of the overall series. Originally, this three-parter aired back-to-back-to-back as a movie event on October 4, 1997.

The episode depicts the first meeting of Batman and Superman in the DCAU, when Batman comes to Metropolis in pursuit of the Joker, who has offered to kill Superman for Lex Luthor. Superman finds himself out of his depth when matched against the Joker's cunning and unpredictability, while Batman has trouble with the resources Luthor provides the Joker with. Both heroes must agree to overcome their differences to put a stop to the Joker and Luthor.

Plot[]

Part I[]

Joker's trump

The Joker and his new trinket.

It's a dark and stormy night in Gotham City as the owner of an Antique Shop is about to close up, but then a mysterious woman enters, allegedly to trade in a music box. It then springs open to reveal a jester's head and douses the man with some gas, which turns out to be Joker venom. Joker then unmasks her to be Harley Quinn and enters to steal a green dragon statue, claiming that he may just have use for it.

Later, the police investigate the crime scene and wonder why Joker would only take one jade statue, worth maybe a hundred thousand dollars, especially when rumor has it that he's short on funds. Batman examines a fragment of the statue that had been left behind and takes it for further study.

Back in the Batcave, he runs a test on the sample, while Alfred reports that the "Laughing Dragon" has gained a bad reputation for being cursed, since all of its owners died prematurely. Batman knows why: the "jade" is emitting low-level radiation, meaning it's actually Kryptonite. Now realizing what the Joker is up to, Batman heads off to Metropolis, where, incidentally, Bruce Wayne has business to attend to.

Duty calls

Duty calls.

Out over Metropolis, terrorists seize control of Air Force One, with the President of the United States on board. Lois Lane is among the press corps on board, virtually guaranteeing Superman's prompt arrival. He easily defeats the terrorists and saves the passengers. When he returns to the ground, Lois tries to let him know how she feels, but they are interrupted when robbers attack the First National Bank, and Superman must fly. Alone, Lois berates herself for revealing her feelings and decides to put Superman behind her.

Joker and Luthor make a deal

The Joker and Luthor seal a deal.

Lex Luthor sourly reads about the President thanking Superman and calls Mercy to get his car ready. Suddenly, she is knocked out by a mechanical Boxing Glove. Luthor enters the car and orders Mercy to take him to the office. However, the driver is revealed to be not Mercy, but Harley Quinn. Luthor then attempts to escape, but Harley locks the car and speeds off, driving quite recklessly. She then notices "a cute hitchhiker" on the edge of the street, which is the Joker lifting his pants leg. She brakes to a halt and the Joker enters the car, explaining to Luthor that he is broke, thanks to Batman's success in closing down his operations in Gotham City. So he makes Luthor an offer: for one billion dollars, he'll kill Superman. Luthor is initially skeptical as he wonders how the Joker has any chance of beating Superman when he can't beat the less powerful Batman. He then changes his mind when the Joker shows him the Kryptonite statue. After the Joker assures him that it couldn't be traced back to him, he accepts.

Lois meets Bruce

Lois Lane meets Bruce Wayne.

Later at the airport, a group of reporters, including Lois and Clark are awaiting the arrival of Bruce Wayne, who is revealed to be in Metropolis to oversee a cooperative venture between Wayne Enterprises and LexCorp. Lois reveals what she has heard of Bruce, believing him to be "Gotham Trash". However, Lois is immediately taken with him when he steps off the plane, as he is arriving Lois is checking herself until she is surprised to see Bruce behind her referring to her as the famous Lois Lane. Flustered, Lois accidentally bumps into him while dropping her belongings.

Lois then begins to pick up her belongings while introducing Clark to Bruce. However, he ignores Clark and instead helps Lois, revealing he was impressed with her adventure on Air Force One. Lois then asks him what brings him to Metropolis, however, they are interrupted by Mercy who informs Bruce his car has arrived. Bruce then invites Lois over to dinner to discuss the news and Lois happily accepts Bruce's invitation, much to Clark's displeasure.

That night, the Joker sets up his base in Metropolis, gassing a local crime boss, Ceasar Carlini, and taking his hideout and his cowered thugs for his own. Carlini is later found, hysterical with laughter, by the Metropolis police, alerting Superman to the Joker's presence in the city.

The next day, an insect-like probe droid, the Wayne/Lex T-7, crawls through a canyon even scaling walls. Bruce is pleased with how well his and Luthor's companies have collaborated in developing robots for space exploration. Luthor says the robots would be even more useful for military purposes, but Bruce, who under their agreement has sole control over the technology's uses and more so with his hatred for guns, firmly squelches the idea.

Bruce lois

Romance blossoms between Lois and Bruce.

Later that night, Bruce and Lois are enjoying their date, and Bruce is asking about Superman. Lois then teases him saying she needs to fix them up together. Bruce apologizes but Lois instead apologizes for her remark, where she admits she was hoping to not talk about Superman, revealing how she has been "consumed" with him lately. Wanting to take her mind off and enjoy the rest of their date, Bruce and Lois enjoy a lovely dance, thus blossoming their romance.

Batman makes a point

Batman and Superman get acquainted.

Later on, Batman appears in a Metropolis nightclub, finding a runaway thug from the gang Joker recruited. While Batman is interrogating him, Superman arrives, saying he doesn't want Batman's brand of vigilantism in his town. To his astonishment, Batman throws him across the room with a judo move. Superman strikes back by ramming him into a wall, which allows the thug to escape. Using his x-ray vision, Superman peeks behind the mask and sees that Batman is Bruce Wayne, much to his annoyance. Superman expresses his disdain for Batman's methods of vigilantism in Metropolis; Batman then pulls out the Kryptonite fragment and warns Superman of the Joker's plan. Batman throws the Kryptonite fragment on a glass of wine and leaves before Superman notices him.

Superman returns to his apartment. His jealousy increases when he gets a call from Lois, who says she's taking the morning off to have breakfast with Bruce. As they talk, he notices a small, bat-themed homing device planted on his cape and picks it up. Clark goes to look out his window, as Lois hangs up. He uses his telescopic vision and spots Batman on the roof of a distant building, watching him through binoculars. Knowing Clark can see him, Batman smiles and with a boy scout salute, jumps down out of sight on the far side. Clark realizes Batman has now discovered his secret identity as well and crushes the device in anger.

Part II[]

Three days later, things are no better between Batman and Superman. Lois and Bruce flirt with each other at the Daily Planet, much to Clark's chagrin. Out of her earshot, they talk about Joker's location, and Clark warns Bruce not to mistreat Lois, based on his reputation as a playboy, which he dismisses. Revealing he and Lois are now in a serious relationship and pointing out to Clark that he missed his chance with Lois. Lois then returns and she and Bruce leave for their date, while Clark is left more annoyed and jealous.

Joker abducts Lois

The Joker collects his card.

That night over dinner at a rooftop restaurant, Bruce and Lois are getting closer, but Bruce, slightly concerned asks if there was ever anything between her and Clark. However, Lois assures him that his only competition "flew away some time ago". Bruce and Lois are just about to share a kiss until they are interrupted by the sudden arrival of the Joker. Bruce and Lois are surrounded by Joker's thugs. Joker then leaps at Lois and shocks her with his electric buzzer, leaving her unconscious in his arms. Bruce demands he let Lois go and attempts to rescue her, but the thugs begin to shoot at him and he soon falls over the edge. However, Bruce manages to save himself, however, they continue to shoot at him, until Bruce begins to fall again. Bruce then soon grabs the edge of the hotel. Joker is soon in his blimp where he rides off with a kidnapped Lois.

Later, the police and Superman have been alerted of the event and assure Bruce that Lois will be saved. Bruce and Superman share a private talk, where Bruce informs Superman to expect the unexpected from Joker, however, Superman dismisses his warning and flies off. At Joker's hideout, he and Harley show a tied up and gagged Lois the Kryptonite statue, where he brags that after he kills Superman, even the tiniest piece of the statue will each be worth a fortune, breaks it in half, saving one half for later. Harley ungags Lois where she expresses her disgust at the Joker's plan. When Lois calls the Joker a sick-demented-murdering freak, Harley finds it rude. Harley then gags Lois again. Joker then tells Lois that she has the story of the century in her hands: The Death of Superman.

At a LexCorp storage unit, Batman (having secretly brought the Batwing with him) flies off into the sky to rescue Lois. At Metropolis Police Department, Joker contacts Superman, inviting him to come alone to one of LexCorp's laboratories. Batman tracks Superman's location and starts to follow him.

Joker overpowers Superman

The Man of Steel subdued.

Superman arrives at the laboratory wearing his Anti-Kryptonite suit. Joker appears confused when the Kryptonite has no effect on him, and Superman quickly gets him to lead him to where Lois is. But just as Superman is about to save Lois, Joker uses his acid flower to destroy the suit. Exposed to the radiation, Superman is quickly incapacitated by Joker, and who gleefully celebrates his victory by electrocuting Superman with his buzzer. Before he can kill Superman, however, Harley Quinn calls and warns that Batman has arrived. Joker leaves, and as soon as Batman enters the room, the doors are sealed and Joker Gas is vented in.

Batman examines the room's contents: barrels of hydrochloric acid, too weak to eat through the walls or door, but instead, Batman uses it to dissolve the Kryptonite. Recovering from its effects, Superman is just able to smash their way out of the room, taking Batman and Lois with him. They confront Joker, who distracts them with grenades made to look like marbles. They flee the laboratory, which is destroyed in an explosion. Batman helps Superman ungag Lois and untie her. The trio attempt to confront the Joker & Harley, but both depart.

The next morning, Luthor makes a public statement that the explosion was only a minor problem but is furious with Joker for destroying his property. Clark, among the reporters, hears Luthor mention his deal with Joker. Later at Joker's hideout, Harley tries to cheer him up, but Joker is furious over what had occurred the previous night. Suddenly, they are attacked when gunshots start to appear out of nowhere, while Joker & Harley hide for cover. They soon stop and the intruders are revealed to be Luthor and Mercy, Luthor confronts Joker and is furious at him for using one of his laboratories.

Joker then calls out to Harley, while Luthor calls out to Mercy and a fight soon ensues between them. As Mercy and Harley fight, Luthor and Joker talk, Luthor demands an explanation and Joker reveals to him that Batman has arrived in Metropolis. Luthor is shocked, but Joker assures him that he still has half of the Kryptonite and can finish the job. However, with Batman now involved, Joker demands more money, but Luthor refuses to say that if he can't handle Superman or Batman then their deal is off. Luthor then calls out to Mercy alerting her it's time they leave and warns Joker that he has one last chance, otherwise he will have him killed.

Later, Clark arrives at Lois's apartment, wanting to check up on her, however, he is surprised to see Bruce there and attempts to leave. However, Lois stops him and asks him to at least tell her why he stopped by, Clark then reveals to Lois and Bruce of how he believes that Luthor is involved with the Joker, but can't prove it yet. Bruce then offers to help to state he could "ask" Luthor.

In his apartment, Luthor is rudely awakened by Batman. Batman demands to know what deal he has made with Joker, but Luthor denies anything as Mercy sneaks behind Batman and attempts to attack him, however, already realizing her presence, Batman knocks her unconscious. He again asks Luthor, who becomes too frightened to even form words. They are soon interrupted when they hear more of Luthor's bodyguards, as Batman leaves he warns Luthor that he'll be back. Luthor's bodyguards bust in but find Batman gone and are about to ask what happened, but Luthor simply asks them to leave. Mercy then awakens and is told by Luthor to call Joker, who realizes that Batman is a serious enough threat and that he must be taken care of as well.

Lois tells Clark that she's planning a transfer to the Planet's Gotham City bureau, feeling that she and Bruce are serious enough that they're practically engaged. Clark is upset by the news, though Lois tries to cheer him up by saying he will no longer have a rival reporter at the Planet and will likely earn a better living. However, they are soon interrupted when Perry alerts them to a distress call from a cruise ship. While Lois starts to immediately work on the story, Clark sneaks away and flies off as Superman. At his hotel, Bruce is working out until he notices a blimp sent by the Joker, inviting Batman to Hobbs Bay. Bruce is confused as to what the Joker is up to now, Alfred then appears with his uniform and the Jet-wing and Bruce as Batman soon takes off.

Batman in trouble

Batman was surprised by the giant robot of Lex Luthor.

Superman arrives at the cruise ship and asks the captain what the problem is. However, he is confused and both he and Superman find a fake distress signal near the ship to lure Superman away. However, the distress becomes real when a bomb is detonated on the hull, causing the ship to sink. Batman arrives at the dock, where he meets the Joker, but it turns out to be a trap as Batman is attacked by a now-armed Wayne/Lex T-7.

Part III[]

Out at sea, Superman repairs the damage to the cruise ship and prevents it from sinking. At the same time, Batman flees the Wayne/Lex T-7 using his new Jet-wing until the machine damages it. In desperation, Batman heads for the Daily Planet building to find Superman, but he is not there, and Lois happens to be working late at night.

Batman saves Lois

Lois' most recent rescuer.

With her in danger of being caught in the crossfire, Batman snatches her up and together they try to run. They are cornered by the robot in the printer room. As it tries to push him into the press, his cape and cowl are caught and pulled off, revealing his identity to Lois. She manages to distract the robot from killing Bruce, long enough for Superman to arrive and destroy it.

Luthor is informed of the Wayne/Lex T-7's failure and realizes that he'll be connected to the crime. He decides to cut his losses and orders one more meeting with Joker.

Back at her apartment, Lois treats a wound on Bruce's back. She is fuming because Bruce deceived her, and also because she honestly cares for him enough that she can't release the story of Batman's true identity. Superman arrives and asks Bruce for a partnership so that they can take in both their enemies. Batman agrees and they leave.

Joker rampage

The Joker prepares to destroy everything Luthor built.

Meanwhile, Joker and Luthor meet at a LexCorp aeronautics factory, where Luthor informs Joker & Harley that he intends to kill them and frame them for all the mayhem that's been going on. Luthor says to Joker & Harley that he will not kill them, but Mercy will kill them. Mercy attempts, but Harley knocks her out so Mercy will not kill her and Joker. Joker turns the tables and takes both Luthor and Mercy prisoner. Since he can no longer collect his billion dollars, Joker decides on a "consolation prize": Luthor's gigantic and heavily armed Lexwing airship (having Harley paint it so that it resembles a grinning mouth, as it is built in the shape of a crescent moon). Luthor offers to pay for his release, but Joker says he isn't interested in money anymore. Instead, he wants to destroy everything Luthor has built, to Luthor's horror. Harley gags Mercy and ties her up to one of the robots and joins Joker who has captured Luthor.

Superman in trouble

The super Wayne/Lex T-7 carries a "gift".

Batman & Superman arrive but are attacked by giant versions of the Wayne/Lex T-7s before they can stop Joker from taking off. Working together, they destroy most of the robots but then are faced with one that has Mercy strapped to its side as a shield, preventing them from hitting it. Batman manages to get the robot off the ground and Superman deactivates it without hurting Mercy. Mercy tells them of Joker's plans, which Superman realizes means destroying half of Metropolis, resulting in mass casualties. The group is confronted by a larger, more advanced robot. Superman tells Batman to go after Joker while he takes care of the robot. Unfortunately, this one is equipped with the other half of the Laughing Dragon, rendering Superman unable to fight back.

Joker goes on a destructive spree over Metropolis. Batman pursues him in the Batwing. Joker damages the plane with missiles, and Batman is forced to eject but manages to board the plane.

While Batman deals with the wing, Superman is pummeled by the robot until it tries to smash him with a heavy door. The door, which had been lined with lead to block Superman's x-ray vision, protects him from the Kryptonite and he destroys the robot, in the process shattering the last of the Kryptonite to pieces. Superman heads off to help stop the Joker.

Rampage explosion

The ship explodes and apparently takes the Joker along with it.

Batman confronts and fights the Joker, leaving Harley to fly the wing, but she only succeeds in shutting off its engines. Fortunately, Superman arrives just in time to steer the wing away from a collision with a building. In the fight, Joker accidentally drops his entire bag of marble grenades while going for a weapon. As the grenades start to explode, the heroes save Luthor and Harley but are unable to reach the Joker in time. As the Joker goes for a parachute, he is trapped by the grenades rolling toward him. In the face of death, the Joker starts laughing maniacally. The grenades go off, setting off an explosion, destroying the wing as it crashes into the ocean.

With the troubles over, Angela Chen reports on the incident: Joker's body has not been found. Luthor is under investigation, but it is unlikely he will be charged with any crime. However, Bruce Wayne, discovering that Luthor has been developing military versions of their robots without his approval, terminates his deal with LexCorp. Harley is returned to Arkham Asylum, much to the amusement of a beaten-up Mercy, who is watching her public arrest on TV and enjoying the last laugh at her expense.

Bruce and Clark bid goodbye

Bruce and Clark say their goodbyes.

Sadly for Bruce, Lois says she adores him, but can't get over his secret activities. He said goodbye, and he and Clark exchange a well-intended farewell before Bruce leaves for Gotham, leaving Metropolis and Lois in Superman's care once again.

Background information[]

Home video releases[]

Production notes[]

  • The catfight between Harley Quinn and Mercy Graves was one of the earliest concieved story beats according to Bruce Timm. "We knew from the beginning that if we were going to pair Luthor and Joker up, they both had henchgirls, and the first thing that popped into our testosterone-driven head was "cat fight!"[1]
  • The idea to pair up Lois Lane and Bruce Wayne for this episode was inspired by Dave Gibbons and Steve Rude's "World's Finest."[1]
  • Lois figuring out Batman's secret identity was Bruce Timm's idea. "I thought it was an ironic thing to do. She's been with Clark Kent/Superman all these years and never saw past those glasses, and then she's with Bruce Wayne a couple of days and suddenly she discovers his secret."[1]
  • In the audio commentary, Bruce Timm says that it was Glen Murakami's suggestion not to put red lips on the Joker. Murakami justifies it on grounds of "simplification", and Timm admits it was a mistake.
  • The tune played by the Joker's balloon in Part II is first heard in the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Robin's Reckoning", during a fight on a carousel. It was also previously heard at the carnival in "Baby-Doll".
  • In part three, when the larger Wayne/Lex T-7 hits Superman with the Gatling gun, there's an explosion that is reused footage from a scene of "My Girl", in which Mr. Eelan blows a vat of hot lead off its support.
  • In part three, when Joker drops his bag of marble grenades, the rolling marbles are reused footage from the marble grenade scene in part two.
  • Because the Laughing Dragon was carved (approximately) thirty years before the events of this episode, it can be deduced that Superman/Clark Kent is at least 30 and possibly older (going by Earth years, as Kryptonians physically age much more slowly than humans do, as shown in "The Call", where Superman is in his 80s but appears in his 50s).

Production inconsistencies[]

  • This is the first time Batman's "Jet-wing" is seen and seems to be a new sight for the Joker. Its first chronological appearance, however, is in the flashbacks of the The New Batman Adventures episode "Old Wounds" where Joker was the present villain.
  • When Superman breaks into LexCorp's chemical plant to confront the Joker for the first time, the last ceiling he crashes through already has a hole in it before he enters.
  • In part II after Superman flew Lois and Batman out of the burning LexCorp factory, despite it being Batman who pushed Superman away (he uses his left elbow to swat Superman's right forearm) the episode's accompanying Described Video incorrectly says "Superman flies with Batman and Lois and touches down across the parking lot across the burning building. He pushes Batman away."

Trivia[]

  • Alan Burnett has stated that the "World's Finest" episodes were a highlight of his career, and may even be one of his favorite things he's ever worked on.[2]
  • The title is a reference to World's Finest Comics, an anthology comic that often featured the team of Superman and Batman after their first meeting in Superman #76. Before that, the comic had simply printed Batman and Superman in separate, unrelated stories.
  • When Luthor tells The Joker that he can't be connected to Superman's death, he responds "Oh, you'll be Mr. Clean." Mr. Clean is a soap brand that features a bald man in its logo.
  • The Joker offers Lois a scoop he calls "The Death of Superman"; this was a major storyline in the comics about Superman's supposed death at the hands of Doomsday.
  • Batman and Joker's involvement in this episode bears strong similarities to the movie Batman: Mask of the Phantasm: Joker is supposed to be paid to stop the show's hero (though his position on the deal is reversed), Bruce's love interest (both played by Dana Delany) is used to get to the show's hero and discovers he is Batman, and Joker is nearly killed in a giant explosion caused by what he was using to fight the hero(es) at the end.
  • Dana Delany previously worked with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm as Andrea Beaumont.
  • On the Batman: The Brave And The Bold episode "The Super-Batman of Planet X!" Kevin Conroy, Dana Delany, and Clancy Brown all voice Zur-En-Arrh counterparts of their characters here; The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, Vilsi Valar (a reporter), and Rohtul (Luthor spelled backwards), respectively.
  • Tim Daly narrowly beat Kevin Conroy for the role of Joe Hackett on the TV series Wings, before Conroy was cast in Batman: The Animated Series.
  • Batman taking out the second round of Joker's goons in the Lexcorp warehouse strongly resembles the Batman: The Animated Series intro in that Batman dodges the bullets the same way and disarms both goons with a single Batarang.
  • Batman's confrontation with Lex Luthor in Batman #573 strongly resembles their first face-to-mask meeting in Part II in that Lex wakes up frightened by the "fright mask" in front of him and realizes that Batman will have to be dealt with and tells Mercy to contact Bane, who was working for them at the time. In the comic, however, Batman renders Mercy unconscious before waking Lex and tells Luthor that she shouldn't bother attacking him from behind.
  • The Joker's line about Superman being "more powerful than a locomotive" is taken from the Fleischer cartoons of the 1940s.
  • Joker's comments Lex's limo has "rich Corinthian leather"; a reference to Ricardo Montalban's 1975 commercial for the Chrysler Cordoba.
  • Harley Quinn's disguise as Mercy Graves is similar to her chauffeur disguise in the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Joker's Favor".
  • Harley Quinn calls Lex "Mr. L", which is an alias Luthor often used in Superman's early Post-Crisis comics, the first time being in The Man of Steel #2.
  • Bruce asking Lois if there's some "special signal" to call Superman and her responding that he's not like Batman is likely a reference to the Bat-signal, which was actually imitated by Luminus in "Solar Power" to signal Superman. Superman's signature signaling device appears later in "Superman's Pal" when he gives a signal watch to Jimmy Olsen.
  • Because it aired in the evening as a special presentation, this episode won a Prime-Time Emmy Award. TMS was very proud of this and displayed the Emmy in their lobby.
  • Unlike other episodes where Joker seemingly perishes, Batman actually implies that Joker had probably died on the Lexwing, where Batman says in reply to Harley Quinn calling out her pet name to the Clown Prince of Crime "At this point, he probably is [pudding]."
  • The comic book adaptation of this contains an extra moment on Page 26 where Bruce mentions to Alfred how he believes that Superman doesn't understand the problem of using brute strength against a foe with a warped mind like The Joker.

Quotes[]

Part I[]

Terrorist: Let's make an example of this hero. A very tragic example, I'm afraid, Miss...?
Lois: Lane.
Terrorist: Lane? Lois Lane? The one Superman always saves?!
Lois: 'Fraid so.

Superman: I hope I didn't shake you and the others up too bad.
Lois: I have to say...I've gotten used to it.

Luthor: (reading) "Metropolis's favorite son: Superman." Yeah, right. Favorite son, my... (slams the paper down)

Luthor: The office. Now
Harley Quinn: (disguised as Mercy) Swell, Mr. L.
Luthor: "Mr. L."?

The Joker: I sense we are kindred spirits, you and I. Oh, there are differences to be sure, like hair.

Luthor: What makes you think you can kill Superman when you can't even handle a mere mortal in a Halloween costume?
Joker: There's nothing mere about that mortal!

Joker: Ceasar Carlini, my old pal! Why I haven't seen you since...Wait, I've never seen you, have I? You need to get out more.

[Carlini is lying in a hospital bed, laughing uncontrollably.]
Dan Turpin: We found him like this at the city dump. (waves a hand in front of Carlini's eyes) The lights are on, but nobody's home.
Superman: But we know who did it. He's telling us right now.

Bruce: So he just appears when there's trouble? No special signal?
Lois: He's not like your Batman, thank goodness!
Bruce: Then how do you contact him?
Lois: Committing a felony helps. Listen, you seem awfully interested in Superman. Do you want me to fix you two up?

Clark: So just keep your ears open. Let me know if you hear any buzz about the Joker.
Bibbo: Sure thing, Mr. Kent. Uh..but, uh, which one? There's lots of jokers around here.

Batman: Where's the Joker?
Binko: Who knows? Making 'ha-ha' with Harley Quinn.

Superman: I heard you were crazy. I didn't think you were stupid.

Superman: (looks through Batman's mask) Bruce Wayne?
Batman: You peeked.

Part II[]

Dan Turpin: Swell, now Gotham is sending us their wackos.

Bruce: She never stops, does she?
Clark: Not that I've noticed. Any luck finding the comedian?
Bruce: (In Batman voice) Three nights, and not so much as a green hair.
Clark: Of course, you have been dividing your time between work and Lois.
Bruce: Is that a problem?
Clark: Let's just say I'm concerned. Your reputation is dubious, in and out of costume.

Bruce: You realize she's just the bait.
Superman: I'll be careful.
Bruce: Careful won't cut it. With Joker, expect the unexpected.
Superman: Maybe you should have remembered that.

Joker: My, you do like to live dangerously. Don't you realize you're moving in on Superman's main squeeze?

Joker: You've got a front row seat for the story of the century, my dear...the death of Superman.

Joker: See that he's street pizza! In this town, some flying fool could've caught him!

Joker: (to Superman) More powerful than a locomotive...! And just about as subtle.

Joker: I know you're trying to cheer me up, Harley, but you see, any time I blow a billion dollar deal...IT REALLY KILLS MY APPETITE!!

Joker: Honestly, Lex, don't you think I feel bad enough already?
Luthor: (Angrily grabs him) YOU MANIAC! YOU IDIOT! HOW DARE YOU USE ONE OF MY LABORATORIES FOR YOUR...

Mercy: (fighting Harley) Here's for that punch in the face!
Harley: Ooh, listen to Little Miss Can't-Take-A-Joke!

Batman: How soon can we get to Hob's Bay?
(Alfred opens a case with the Jet-wing.)
Alfred: If I may be so bold, sir..."when in Rome"...

Joker: Copybat, copybat. Suffering from propulsion envy, Batboy?

Joker: Think of it as a welcome wagon, Bats. Welcoming you to the nearest mortuary.

Part III[]

Joker: Ooh, this could be a fair fight after all...And who wants to see that?

Lois: (having learned that Bruce is Batman) So when were you going to tell me, the honeymoon?

Lois: How could you have lied to me like that?
Bruce: Now, I never actually said I wasn't Batman.

Lois: I'll get some iodine for that scrape. Burning, stinging, iodine.

Bruce: It's ironic, you know. She likes Bruce Wayne and she likes Superman. It's the other two guys she's not crazy about.
Superman: Too bad we can't mix and match.

Joker: Somehow, Poo, I don't think we're gonna get the chance to say much.
Harley: You...you mean he's going to kill us?
Luthor: No, she is. I abhor violence.

Harley: (as the Lexwing explodes) Puddin'!!
Batman: At this point he probably is.

Harley: (as she's being arrested) I want a lawyer! I want a doctor! I want a cheese sandwich!!!
Mercy: (watching it on TV) Now that's funny! (literally laughs so hard, it hurts) Ow!

Bruce: Coming to make sure I'm leaving?
Clark: Actually, I thought we worked pretty well together. Not that I'd want to make it a regular event.
Bruce: She's all yours now. If you can handle that, but you'd better take good care of her. 'Cause I know where you live.
